Help for Bipolar Disorder in Boston
With intensive outpatient* bipolar disorder care, you can get the treatment you need from professionals in a supportive environment right on the school’s doorstep. You can continue attending class, meeting with friends, and enjoying your routine – just with added support for your bipolar disorder.
You can get the diagnosis and the bipolar disorder treatment you need by going to Back Bay Mental Health. At Back Bay Mental Health, we understand that no two experiences of bipolar disorder are the same, and we use evidence-based therapies designed to help you regain a sense of equilibrium without losing the essence of what makes you, well, you.
What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is one of the most complex mental health conditions today. For some, it will show up as dramatic shifts in mood. For others, it’s a big swing from feeling energetic and even manic to depressive and fatigued. It is an exhausting set of contradictions, and you may feel powerless to stop your symptoms, but that isn’t the case.
Bipolar Disorder Types Treated at Back Bay Mental Health
There isn’t a template for bipolar disorder. While there are many similarities from one person to another, there certainly isn’t a single experience.
That being said, your bipolar disorder will tend to be grouped into one of three different types. Understanding the type of bipolar disorder you have can change the game. It can help open up support options and give you greater insight into why your brain works the way it does.
Bipolar I Disorder
Bipolar I is the most famous version of bipolar disorder, simply because it’s the most outwardly obvious to others. If you have Bipolar I, then you’ll have manic episodes. These episodes may even disrupt your life (make you act out at school, act impulsively, and so on). In some cases, you may even need hospitalization or inpatient treatment after a particularly intense manic episode. Unfortunately, the cycle doesn’t stop there, as often those with bipolar I experience a depressive episode after their manic period.
Bipolar II Disorder
Bipolar II isn’t quite as outwardly intense, but that doesn’t make it any easier to manage than those who have bipolar I. Those with bipolar II, for example, will experience fewer manic phases (officially called hypomania), so they might not experience as many or as severe disruptions to their lives as those with bipolar I. That being said, the depression episodes following hypomania are still there. Not only that, but they may even feel more intense and all-consuming, which is why you will still benefit from personalized bipolar disorder treatment.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Cyclothymic disorder is the final type of disorder on the bipolar spectrum that sits on the lower end of the symptom intensity scale, but that doesn’t mean you would be any less deserving of intensive outpatient* bipolar disorder treatment than someone with bipolar I or II. Those with cyclothymic disorders experience milder symptoms but typically over a more extended period. While you may not quite reach the peaks and troughs of bipolar I and II, the length of episodes can be just as debilitating for your quality of life.
Those with bipolar disorders do not need to manage their conditions alone. With our bipolar disorder treatment Boston based, we focus on patient-first care, not condition-first. This means our primary focus when building a treatment program is you, the individual, not the condition you want help with. With this patient-first approach, we can adjust your treatment based on what you need and are responding to.
We are here to help you regain life, education, and career stability. We’ll help you develop coping mechanisms and support you to thrive academically, professionally, and personally.

Is Bipolar Treatment Right for You?
Bipolar disorder isn’t always easy to spot, which makes it challenging to get a diagnosis and the treatments you need from licensed providers. Some might try to brush off their symptoms as just mood swings, a sudden burst of energy, stress, or even burnout.
The fact is, however, that you deserve to get support even if you are “just” experiencing burnout or stress. If you don’t understand your behavior and want to heal or build skills to cope better with your courseload, workload, and even life responsibilities, then visit our treatment facility.
At the very least, head to our Back Bay Mental Health facility for a consultation. We can help you get diagnosed if needed and can then help by building you a bespoke treatment program designed to work with your condition, your concerns, and your routine in mind.
Do You Qualify for Bipolar Disorder Treatment?
Bipolar disorder symptoms show up differently and are experienced differently between patients. You don’t need to tick every box to warrant treatment, so there’s no harm in visiting us to get a diagnosis or talk through what’s concerning you.
With that being said, what are the bipolar disorder symptoms we look for? You can likely start bipolar disorder treatment from Back Bay Mental Health if you experience:
- Intense mood swings that impact your studies, work, or even safety.
- Difficulty in maintaining relationships due to those mood swings.
