What is Medication Management
Psychiatric medication management means that you use medication to help you manage the more extreme symptoms of your mental health condition. Psychiatric medication management isn’t available everywhere; only specific health services can prescribe medication.
It means if you have previously had talk therapy with a psychologist but not a psychiatrist, then you may not have had access to medication management treatments.
At Back Bay Mental Health we have psychiatrists on hand who can offer medication management to our patients. After the initial consultation, we will only decide whether you are a right fit for medication.
We will examine your medical and treatment history during that assessment and listen to your preferences and symptoms. If we do include medication management in your treatment plan. In that case, we’ll then monitor you and make necessary adjustments in terms of dose and even medication type to find the happy balance that boosts your well-being the most.
What Mental Health Conditions Use Medication?
Medication management is a possible treatment option for several mental health conditions. It can help you manage specific mental health symptoms or to help you manage the entire disorder, depending on the severity of your symptoms.
Medication management may be available to you if you have:
Depression
If you have depression, you may be given antidepressants. Antidepressants can help you regulate extreme mood swings. If you’ve found it almost impossible to get out of bed or have lost all interest or care in your studies, hobbies, or work, then a course of antidepressants and therapy can help you reclaim those passions.
Anxiety
Those with anxiety disorders may also be able to benefit from the right medications. In this case, we may prescribe Anxiolytics or benzodiazepines.
ADHD
Those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may benefit from stimulants. We will also work on helping through a holistic approach, which includes building coping skills alongside your medication management so you can thrive in school, work, or at home.
Bipolar Disorder
Those with bipolar disorder tend to have extreme mood swings. Psychiatric medications may be used to help you stabilize your mood, or we may prescribe antipsychotics depending on the severity of your manic/depressive episodes.
PTSD and Trauma
If you experience post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma, postpartum depression, or similar trauma-based disorders, we may recommend medication management to help you balance the extreme symptoms of your mental health condition.
Addiction
We may prescribe certain medications if you are trying to beat your addiction and are in the first stage after completing an inpatient program.
And More
We may also prescribe medications to manage symptoms of other disorders. The type of medication we use, its dose, and how frequently we prescribe it will depend on your symptoms, needs, and personal history. Another factor we’ll consider is how your symptoms are interrupting your life. If your symptoms have made it impossible to continue your degree, for example, we may start with a medication regimen and an intensive outpatient roster of therapies.
How Can Medication Help with Mental Health?
A medication plan can help you stabilize extreme moods and symptoms. It is not a treatment all on its own. A medication regimen only really works if you also commit to other therapy methods.
Think of medication as a way to soothe the flare-ups in your mental health. It can help you keep your mood on a consistent level, but ideally, you won’t want to remain on the medication your entire life. If you are struggling in university or at your workplace because of your bipolar disorder, for example. In that case, medication can help even out your manic and depressive episodes enough that you can focus on your education and relationships.
The best way for our specialized medication management to work is for it to be used alongside talk therapy, action-based therapies, group therapy, and holistic health treatment.
Medication does have a role in helping you with your mental health recovery, yes, but we believe it’s only useful if it’s combined with other treatment options. That’s why you’ll also have access to CBT, CPT, dialectical therapy, EMDR, and more when you start your mental health treatment with us.
What Psychiatric Medications Are Used?
The psychiatric medications that we may prescribe will depend on your health conditions, the severity of your symptoms, and if you have any other mental health conditions on top of your main diagnosis. You can experience depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms all at once, for example. We will take in all of your mental health conditions at once when deciding whether or not you would benefit from psychiatric medications and medication management services.
Do I Qualify for Psychiatric Medication?
You will need to visit our practice in Boston for a full evaluation before we can decide whether psychiatric medication management is right for your mental health. Even if we decide to try medication management services at the start, we may change our stance based on the response to the psychiatric medications.
It is also critical to understand that the primary focus at our clinic is psychological and holistic treatment. Our patient-centered approach puts psychological treatments like cognitive behavioral health therapy first and psychiatric drugs second.
We can help students build the strategies, habits, and tools needed to thrive at school. It’s how we can help professionals succeed in their careers and how we can help you improve your relationships if they hurt you or others.
We will never only ever offer a medication regimen. Psychiatric medication is only available at our clinic alongside a full mental health treatment plan that includes individual, group, and holistic therapy.
We have psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychiatrists on our team. If your mental health journey needs medication management services, we can include that in your personalized treatment plan.
