Psychiatric Evaluations

Steps from the Green Line

Psychiatric Evaluation in Boston

To get access to psychiatric care and medication management, you need an official diagnosis from psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, or physicians. Needing a diagnosis can stop many people from getting the robust and rounded treatment plan that they need to help manage their mental illnesses.

If you choose Back Bay Mental Health, you get it all.

We are a healthcare provider that includes neuropsychological testing as standard whenever new patients sign on for our services. We start with a psychological assessment before creating a personalized treatment plan just for you.

We’ll use critical details like your medical history, symptoms, and treatment goals to help diagnose you and build a robust treatment plan to help you realize your goals and lead the best life possible.

Come to us if you are a student whose mental health issues have started to impact your ability to study, commit to extra-curricular or internship opportunities, or have your relationships suffer during university.

Come to us if you are a professional who cannot continue to work or balance your relationships and responsibilities with your mental health symptoms.

We can help everyone, from children to teens to young adults and beyond, get the diagnosis and treatment plan they need to begin their mental health journey.

What Happens During a Psychiatric Evaluation for Adults in Boston?

A psychological evaluation is the assessment we give all new patients so that we can understand their mental health, needs, and preferences. It will include filling out intake papers and questionnaires and a one-on-one interview with one of our psychiatrists.

During this interview, we’ll ask you questions, have you explain your symptoms and how you feel, and then use that information, along with your treatment history, medical history, and preferences, to put together an initial list of cognitive, behavioral, holistic, and potential medication recommendations for your treatment.

Part of what we’ll ask is how your symptoms are affecting your routines and responsibilities. For example, suppose your anxiety has made it impossible for you to attend seminars or meetings where you may be called on to talk. In that case, we need to know to adjust our treatment recommendations and therapy session focus. We can help you first work towards specific goals and then generally for as long as you need help with your mental health conditions.

Mental Health Conditions We Can Diagnose

There are two reasons to get a psychiatric evaluation done at our clinic in Boston, MA.

One, you can get a diagnosis from a certified expert.

Two, you can get a complete mental health treatment regimen, which includes medication management.

Of course, as an intensive outpatient program, we also offer mental health services, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing treatment, dialectical treatment, and more.

With us, you’ll have everything you need to understand, manage, and, in some cases, even overcome your mental illnesses or conditions.

Learning Disabilities

We can help those with learning disabilities get the services, treatment, and even medication that are needed to thrive at school, during university, at work, or in private life.

Borderline Personality Disorder

We can help those with personality disorders like BPD get the mental health services they need. These services include psychiatry therapies, holistic wellness sessions, group therapy, and medication management. We cannot start helping you manage your BPD, however, until after our psychological evaluation.

Anxiety Disorders

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorders: These types of disorders are notable in that patients with GAD tend to worry and stress about everyday events. This anxiety could be about how you perform at work or on an exam, to everyday events like if you attended “well enough” or even about being late. Unlike regular stress or worry, those with GAD can be crippled by their fear.
  • Social Anxiety Disorders: Social anxiety disorders are another type of anxiety disorder. In this case, your anxiety is focused on social events. For example, talking in class or a meeting could trigger an anxiety attack since you feel watched, judged, embarrassed, or humiliated in social settings.
  • Phobias: If you have an irrationally intense fear of something (an object, a situation, a place, etc.), we can help. Typically, phobias revolve around nature, medical procedures, or animals or are situational (speaking during a project, leaving home, etc.).
  • Panic Disorders: If your anxiety attacks culminate in a full panic attack, then you may be diagnosed with a panic disorder. Those with panic disorders can benefit from psychiatry treatments, medication management, and holistic care. If you have been having panic attacks, especially if those panic attacks are hurting your goal-setting (graduate from university, keep your job, maintain friendships, etc), then we can help.
  • Trauma Disorders: Come in for an assessment, and we can help diagnose you if you have one of the trauma disorders like PTSD. Not only can we help you with psychiatry, therapy, and holistic healing, but we can also provide medication management to help you manage the extreme ends of your symptoms.

Mood disorders can be particularly difficult to deal with since they can impact your motivation and energy levels. Thanks to our comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, you can get the diagnosis you need, as well as the mental health support that can help you start managing your moods and reclaiming your life.

Depression

Depression can make you feel sad, detached, unmotivated, and exhausted. In short, depression can take life experiences away from you, but you aren’t alone. If you’ve found yourself less and less motivated about the activities you used to love or about your general life, we can help you from the consultation onwards.

We can help you if you have any of these depression disorders or other psychiatric disorders that include depression as a symptom:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Depression with Psychosis

Bipolar Disorder

Those living with bipolar disorder and other psychiatric disorders, including mania or depression, can get help here at Back Bay Mental Health in Boston, MA. We start our treatment planning with comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, which can help you understand if you have bipolar disorder, as well as which type:

  • Bipolar I Disorder
  • Bipolar II Disorders
  • Cyclothymia Disorder
  • Unspecific Bipolar Disorder

If you do have one of these mental illnesses, we can then help support you through a combination of individual therapy, group therapy, and medication management.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, or PMDD, is a type of mood disorder that usually kicks into gear around ten days before your next menstrual cycle and stops once your period begins. Though it’s tied to your hormonal cycle, it can cause a range of mental health issues. With us, you can get medication management and therapy support to help you manage your condition – after we complete our comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. So, if you’ve been struggling to keep up in class or work due to your extreme symptoms, get in touch with our team for help.

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)

DMDD is usually diagnosed in children around 10, but that doesn’t mean it naturally goes away on its own. A child with DMDD will have a lifelong mental health condition, but it can be managed with extensive training and treatment. We can help children with DMDD and continue to support these patients throughout their lives.

We can help you get started with your mental health recovery by helping diagnose not only your eating disorder but any comorbid psychiatric disorders you may have, like anxiety, trauma, or mood disorders like depression.

We can also help by giving you an ADHD diagnosis if you qualify for one. This diagnosis is particularly important for those in school, university, and the workforce as it will open up access to support systems, medications, and other disability services that will help you thrive better in life.

We can particularly help women who have gone through their childhood and teen years without support. The reason this happens is that a male child typically exhibits different symptoms than a girl, so a boy is more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD as a child. If you experience ADHD symptoms but have not been diagnosed, we can help you during our initial assessment.

If you have an addiction, then we can help. If you need a medical detox first, then you might even be referred to us by your inpatient program. Otherwise, we can evaluate you during your first appointment and help you from there.

Causes of Mood Disorders

Mood disorders are unique even amongst themselves. This means what causes mood disorders in one person might be very different from someone else.

You may develop mood disorders, for example, after experiencing trauma. Others might develop mood disorders due to genetic factors. Hormonal, chemical, and physical causes are also common when it comes to mood disorders.

You can learn more about the specific causes of your mood disorder by identifying the type of mood disorder that you have. Causes for depression, for example, tend to differ from premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

How We Use Your Psych Evaluations to Help You

Help You Understand Your Mental Health

Understanding your mental health conditions can take a lot of fear, frustration, and shame out of the equation. If simple knowledge alone isn’t enough, we can offer several therapies that help you learn how to accept yourself and your needs while motivating you to continue through the treatment plan.

Build a Comprehensive Care Plan

The treatment plan we make for you will be comprehensive, personalized, and adjusted as needed throughout your time with us. As an intensive outpatient treatment program, we can offer regular sessions with psychiatrists, psychologists, and counselors alike at a frequency that suits your mental health needs.

Do You Qualify for a Psychiatric Evaluation?

We always start every new patient relationship with a psychiatric evaluation. This evaluation allows us to fully understand the extent of your mental health conditions and put together a treatment plan. You don’t need to qualify for a psychiatry assessment. We use it as a tool to learn more about your medical and mental health needs and then continue our psychiatry services from there.

Visit us even if you don’t believe you are “bad enough” for treatment. If you are struggling, we can help. We can help if you start having panic attacks or anxiety just thinking about going to class. We can help if you feel so tired and detached from your life that you want to quit your job and disappear.

We can help you with whatever concerns you. We just use that psychiatry evaluation to understand how you need us and what services would work best for you to overcome your challenges.
